Biology is the most powerful technology ever created. DNA is software, protein are hardware, cells are factories.

Welcome to the 2024 Southern California Biomedical Sciences Graduate Student Research Symposium, organized by graduate students for graduate students. With this symposium, we aim to bring together the graduate research community from institutions throughout Southern California and to provide an opportunity to share and celebrate graduate student research. The symposium will be open to both PhD and Master students to register and present.

We invite all who are participating to share their work and submit an abstract of no more than 2,500 characters as part of the registration. This symposium caters towards both basic and translational biomedical research. Participants are encouraged to present a poster of their research, and certain abstracts will be chosen for oral presentations. Awards will be given out for best posters and presentations.

This year, we are excited to present our keynote speaker, Dr. Jason Moore, Chair of the Department of Computational Biomedicine and Director of the Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Education (CAIRE) at Cedars-Sinai. The primary focus of his lab is to understand human health as a complex adaptive system, with the goal to improve the prediction, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of common diseases such as Alzheimer’s, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Moore’s lab takes a computational approach focused on the development, evaluation, and application of innovative artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and systems approaches to modeling biomedical big data for precision health. We are honored to have Dr. Moore at this year’s symposium, and invite all of you to attend his keynote address.

Over the past few years, we’ve had participants from all across California and out-of state attend our symposium. This is a wonderful opportunity to be able to meet and network with fellow graduate researchers, and to take advantage of the rich biomedical research environment of Southern California.

This symposium is hosted and presented by the Cedars-Sinai Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. We hope to continue to foster inter-institutional relations all across Southern California and beyond through programs such as this.

Again, thank you for your interest and we hope to see you and your research this year.
